PT Petnesia Resindo (PNR), an Indonesian PET resin producer under the Toray Group, has halted operations from 20 November to 20 January 2026 as weak domestic demand and rising competition from duty-free Chinese cargoes continue to weigh on margins.
PNR, which runs a 3-hectare plant with an annual capacity of 85,000 tons of food-grade bottle resin, had already been operating at reduced rates before opting for a full shutdown. The company sources PTA feedstock from Mitsui & Co., but persistent price pressure in the domestic market has limited the viability of continued production.
The suspension underscores the broader challenges facing Indonesia’s PET sector, where 0%-duty Chinese imports have intensified competition and eroded local producers’ market share. Market participants say the temporary closure is likely to tighten spot availability of bottle-grade PET, although import volumes are expected to continue dominating supply and capping any significant price recovery.
Looking ahead, traders expect a cautious tone to persist, with domestic pricing and production decisions closely tied to import trends and end-user buying through the year-end and into early 2026.
