Sasol Limited has announced the completion of the Lake Charles Chemicals Project (LCCP) as the company commenced the ‘beneficial operation’ at the LDPE unit on 15 November 2020 after much delay.

The LCCP project consists of seven integrated units:

-       1.5 million tons/year ethane cracker

-       470,000 tons/year LLDPE unit

-       420,000 tons/year LDPE unit

-       300,000 tons/year EO-EG plant

-       100,000 tons/year exthoxylation unit, and

-       173,000 tons/year Ziegler alcohols plant

As all units are now operating stably, Sasol Limited sold 50% of the petrochemical business, consist of the ethane cracker, the LDPE, and LLDPE lines, to LyondellBasell for USD 2 billion in order to ease the company’s debt burden. LyondellBasell will be taking charge of the new joint-venture.
