TODAY’S DEVELOPMENTS

POLYPROPYLENE · CHINA

China homo-PP charges towards a historic high but converters are running out of room

China’s homo-PP market has surged to an eight-year high as tight producer inventories, mounting feedstock security concerns and sustained energy market strength propel prices towards their historical peak. Yet the rally is increasingly testing downstream converters, many of whom are struggling to absorb higher resin costs as finished-product sales fail to keep pace.

The post-holiday advance has gained further traction on unusually lean producer inventories and persistent uncertainty over petrochemical feedstock availability. However, with spot prices approaching the levels last seen in 2018, buyers are questioning how much further the market can climb before demand resistance begins to undermine the rally.

Can tightening supply sustain the surge, or will mounting demand destruction finally put the brakes on prices?

POLYETHYLENE · VIETNAM

Malaysia major faces a tougher sell in Vietnam as LDPE competition intensifies

A Malaysian producer has raised November LDPE offers to Vietnam for a third consecutive month, but the latest increases have slowed as converters resist peak resin prices. With fresh US cargoes approaching, competitively priced South Korean and Middle Eastern material readily available, and downstream packaging demand remaining sluggish, the producer’s latest price list is struggling to translate into firm buying interest.

With conversion margins under pressure and uncertainty clouding the market outlook, buyers remain reluctant to commit to large volumes or long lead-time shipments.
