Maintenance vs Demand: China’s PET Market Faces a Tug-of-War

The Chinese PET bottle market remains caught between fading summer demand and tightening supply as producers step up maintenance to defend margins. With the peak beverage season drawing to a close, downstream buying momentum is weakening, leaving the market increasingly exposed to upstream volatility. CommoPlast Plant Status data showed that several Chinese PET bottle plants have significantly reduced operating rates, while at least one major producer is preparing for a month-long shutdown, signalling a deliberate effort to prevent supply from outpacing demand.

Whether these supply-side measures can translate into meaningful price support remains uncertain. The production cuts should help contain inventory pressure and establish a firmer floor, but weakening seasonal demand could limit the upside. Meanwhile, volatile upstream energy costs remain a key swing factor for PET pricing. The market is therefore likely to remain volatile in the near term, with maintenance providing downside protection while fading demand caps the potential for a sustained rally.

Malaysia PP Buyers Return — But Is Demand Strong Enough to Lift the Market?

Buying activity in the Malaysian domestic PP market picked up in the week ending 14 August, with buyers returning to replenish inventories after months of cautious purchasing. The restocking push, coupled with low on-hand stocks and rising replacement costs, has strengthened sellers’ resolve to lift spot prices.

However, the demand recovery remains measured. Most converters are topping up only what they need rather than building sizeable inventories, citing sluggish end-product demand amid seasonal weakness. The resulting tug-of-war between tightening availability and mediocre consumption is likely to keep the Malaysian PP market rangebound in the near term, with buyers closely watching for the return of PrefChem as a potential shift in the supply balance.
