China PET bottle offers hold as unplanned plant shutdowns offset futures reversal

China's PX and PTA 2701 futures surged to fresh multi-month highs early this week on firmer crude before reversing by more than 7% within days. Despite the retreat in feedstock costs, local PET offers held broadly steady to firmer week-on-week, partly buoyed by news that a producer has brought three units to a halt.

Buying interest stayed thin, with buyers resisting the initial price hike and producers acknowledging sales pressure remains limited as more plants head into shutdowns next month. The production outages, not the futures rally, appear to be doing the heavier lifting on price support.

China PVC output in July climbed despite export demand buckling under geopolitical qualms

China's PVC market split further apart in July, with local production edging higher month-on-month as cheaper carbide costs pushed top-tier plant operating rates close to full capacity. Exports dropped sharply, however, and imports slid to their lowest levels in years, weighed down by seasonal monsoon factors and compounded by US-Iran tensions that lifted upstream ethylene costs while dampening demand across neighbouring markets.

Consequently, cargoes bound for India fell by more than half month-on-month, and Southeast Asian buyers held to routine commitments rather than build inventory at firmer prices. Converters across the region say feedstock cost gains still cannot be passed through to finished goods, leaving prices largely disconnected from consumption.
