Indonesian major concedes ground as buyers anticipate supply wave
An Indonesian major has cut selected grades on Monday after last week’s rollover, while weak downstream demand and expectations of import cargoes arrival are giving buyers more leverage, particularly in PE.
Yet supply remains the key complication in PP. Some grades’ prompt availability is still tight, keeping these grades relatively supported even as other PP grades face softer buying interest. The contrast is becoming increasingly pronounced: demand is weak, but some grades simply do not have enough prompt material to fall sharply.
That balance could be tested around mid-October. Chinese offers are already showing competitive import economics, and incoming cargoes could give buyers alternatives just as downstream demand remains subdued.

PTTGC returns to the market after months of curtailments
PTTGC has restored part of its PE production after months of feedstock-driven curtailments, but the market impact may take time to materialise. The Thai producer restarted one affected PE line at Map Ta Phut on Wednesday, with another unit slated to return this week. The sequential restarts should gradually improve operating flexibility after ethylene constraints forced the producer to prioritise production across its PE portfolio.
The shift is already being felt in the regional market last week. Thai offers into Indonesia was cut, as expectations of improving availability meet competition from alternative origins and persistently weak downstream demand. However, the recovery in regional spot availability is unlikely to be immediate and swift.
And PTTGC’s production recovery comes as Thailand’s petrochemical industry faces a much bigger question. PTTGC and SCG are studying a potential merge of their petrochemical operations, with the outcome potentially reshaping the country’s capacity strategy.
