China PE enters entrenched upcycle on prolonged supply constraints

China’s PE market is tightening beyond a cyclical squeeze, as geopolitical disruptions compound heavy maintenance, unresolved outages, and energy constraints. With a significant portion of capacity offline and limited restart visibility, prompt supply has thinned sharply, particularly in HDPE where losses are most acute, anchoring the rally firmly in supply erosion rather than demand strength.

The market is becoming structurally more reactive, with reduced ability to absorb shocks, keeping prices biased higher in the near term unless a meaningful wave of restarts materialises.
