More competitive South Korean homo-PP yarn offers fail to sway Vietnam buyers

South Korean PP producers have returned to Vietnam’s import market with more competitive homo-PP yarn offers than their Chinese counterparts, but efforts to establish a higher price floor have met firm buyer resistance. Rising feedstock costs and tightening propylene availability across North Asia have strengthened suppliers’ resolve to defend prices, yet Vietnamese converters have capped their buying interest at $1,400/ton.

The standoff exposes a widening gap between replacement costs and actual buying appetite. South Korean suppliers have limited room to concede further as production costs climb, while Vietnamese converters remain comfortable with resin inventories secured before the Golden Week holiday. Prompt requirements can also be met through domestic spot purchases, reducing the urgency to accept higher import offers. With downstream margins under pressure and finished-product sales sluggish, buyers see little justification for chasing prices higher.

The impasse leaves suppliers facing a test of pricing discipline. Whether they can sustain current offers without fresh business will depend on how long cost pressures outweigh buyer resistance, particularly if converters continue to defer purchases and draw on existing stocks.

Red Sea escalation clouds 2027 freight negotiations as spot rates face fresh pressure

Escalating Saudi-Houthi hostilities have renewed concerns over Red Sea shipping security as carriers and shippers enter 2027 annual contract negotiations. Container carriers have gradually increased Asia-Europe transits through the Red Sea since June, helping ease rates alongside weaker post-peak season demand. However, renewed strikes could disrupt that recovery. Asia-Mediterranean rates rose 7% last week, while prices on both major lanes remain above $3,000/FEU, around 70% higher than a year earlier.

Elevated rates and port congestion continue to support carriers, but new vessel deliveries and further Red Sea transits could add capacity in 2027. Some shippers are therefore reluctant to lock in annual contracts at current levels, despite carriers’ efforts to push through further increases.

Across the transpacific, Far East-US West Coast rates fell 2%, while US ocean import arrivals are projected to decline 11% month on month in November. The end of peak-season demand could put further pressure on spot rates before pre-Lunar New Year shipments lift volumes again.
