KPIC is not the only South Korean producer that announced operating rate cuts due to negative margins. Earlier this week, LG Chem decided to lower run rates at three of its steam crackers to 80% throughout January.

The company has been limiting spot selling to build up inventory ahead of the shutdown.
According to CommoPlast data, SK Energy owns two steam crackers at the same locations, which operating status are unclear at the time of this report.

The cracker was taken off-stream on 8 November 2021 for scheduled maintenance. The producer initially planned to bring the unit online on 6 January 2022
All three crackers with a combined capacity of 3.25 million tons of ethylene and 1.48 million tons of propylene would operate at reduced rates throughout the month of January.
